The application may utilize the infrastructure of the Open UBI Oulu testbed described below, any proprietary computing resources provided by the participant and any publicly available third party computing resources such as any social networking services such as Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter.

For our infrastructure we provide API documentation and selected publications reporting how a particular infrastructure has been used to provide service(s) to the general public.


UBI-hotspots - 15 large interactive public displays around Oulu

UBI-hotspot at market place

UBI-hotspots are a network of 15 large interactive public displays installed at pivotal indoor and outdoor locations around Oulu. Hotspots are essentially 57" or 65" LCD panels equipped with other co-located computing resources such as touch-screen foil, two overhead cameras, loudspeaker, NFC/RFID reader and panOULU BT AP. Six outdoor hotspots are double-sided while nine indoor hotspots are one-sided excluding double-sided indoor hotspots at Oulu Airport and Ritaharju community center.

In terms of interaction a hotspot is in either passive broadcast (digital signage) or interactive mode. In passive broadcast mode, the whole screen is allocated to the UBI-channel showing a customizable playlist. When the overhead cameras detect a face or someone touches the screen, the hotspot changes to an interactive mode, where the screen is divided between the UBI-channel and a customizable UBI-portal. The web-based framework allows integrating any web service into the UBI-portal as long as the service complies with given design guidelines. The current version of the portal contains 25 distinct interactive services provided by us, the City of Oulu, businesses, NGOs and creative communities. Currently, the hotspots attract on average ~1500 clicks per screen monthly, but variations between hotspots located at different locations can be very large. The six most popular services include four games, the Oulu Today page provided by a local newspaper, and the City of Oulu’s page.

Virtual hotspots are available for remote application development. Any finalist providing a service to the hotspots will be given exclusive access to selected outdoor and indoor hotspots for few days to collect data without 'noise' from other services.

UBI-wall - Very large interactive wall at movie theatre lobby with ~1000 daily visitors

UBI-wall

UBI-wall is a large interactive wall comprising of six MultiTaction Cell 55" Full HD LCD panels. They are arranged in a 3x2 tiled array configuration, resulting in a display of total size of 3.73 x 1.43 m, including 16 mm bezel. The panel array is elevated by a 75 cm tall stand. The touchscreen technology is implemented with backlight emitter IR cameras achieving up to 200 fps tracking speed and 2 mm positional accuracy. The cells are connected to the three graphics cards (GeForce GTX 670, 2048 MB) of a single control computer (Intel® Core™ i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz × 8 and 16 GB RAM). Accessories include 5.1 audio system, video cameras and MS Kinect depth sensors.

Plaza Movie Theatre

UBI-wall will be placed at the entrance lobby of the Finnkino Plaza movie theatre at downtown Oulu. With 8 auditoriums and about 1000 daily visitors the Plaza is the largest movie theatre in Oulu. Movie theatre related content such as trailers and access to Finnkino's online services (e.g. customer competitions) will be available for participants. Use of audio and gesture control is allowed. UBI-wall will be placed nearby UBI-table (see below) and coupling the two devices in an application is allowed.

Note! Any application proposed to be developed for the UBI-wall has to be preapproved by the movie theatre's management before the submission deadline. Preapproval is requested by sending a sufficiently comprehensive description of the proposed application by email to ubi-challenge@ubioulu.fi.

UBI-table - Interactive table at movie theatre lobby with ~1000 daily visitors

UBI-table

UBI-table is an interactive table implemented with a MultiTaction Cell 55" Full HD LCD Embedded Windows 7. The touchscreen technology is implemented with backlight emitter IR cameras achieving up to 200 fps tracking speed and 2 mm positional accuracy. The LCD panel is framed with a 4" wooden frame and placed on a stand so that the surface is at 89 cm height from floor level.

UBI-table will be placed at the entrance lobby of the Plaza movie theatre at downtown Oulu. With 8 auditoriums and about 1000 daily visitors the Plaza is the largest movie theatre in Oulu. Movie theatre related content such as trailers will be available for participants. Use of audio is allowed. UBI-table will be placed nearby UBI-wall (see above) and coupling the two devices in an application is allowed.

panOULU WLAN - Municipal WiFi network providing open and free wireless Internet access

panOULU WLAN access point

panOULU WLAN is a municipal WiFI network providing open and free wireless Internet access to the general public. The network is provided by a consortium of municipalities, public organizations and ISPs. Currently, the network has ~1400 IEEE 802.11 WLAN access points. While downtown Oulu is blanketed with a rather uniform coverage, elsewhere coverage is provided as hotspots. Most municipal offices and buildings such as libraries, schools and sports facilities have panOULU coverage. The network is currently used by ~50000 devices monthly. A large proportion of them are owned by international visitors that enjoy the open and free wireless Internet access as a welcome alternative to exorbitant international roaming fees of commercial mobile data.

panOULU WLAN is primarily provided as a public access network to the Internet where the services reside. However, at the same time the network has been a valuable resource for numerous R&D projects. Few panOULU specific services such as the panOULU Luotsi information service and the panOULU Conqueror game reported in the publications below have also been developed.

panOULU BT - Network of Bluetooth access points around Oulu

panOULU BT access points

panOULU BT is a network of Bluetooth (BT) access points (AP) deployed around Oulu. APs are Bluegiga Access Server 2293 and AX4 models that have three BT version 2.0 radios capable of serving seven clients simultaneously, thus an AP can serve at most 21 clients at any given time. The BT inquiry timeout of the APs is set to 10 seconds.

18 APs are installed on traffic light poles around downtown Oulu. 17 APs are installed inside UBI-hotspots around Oulu (see above). 8 portable APs are equipped with a touch screen (Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101).

A central application server manages the APs, schedules the transmission of messages to BT devices and collects traces of bypassing BT devices. When an AP discovers a nearby mobile device with its BT radio on and visible, it forwards the BT ID of the device to the application server. The configuration of the application server determines whether a message is attempted to be pushed to the device.

We have used the panOULU BT network for establishing WPAN hotspots for subsequent delivery of multimedia content to mobile devices, for realizing distributed UIs with the UBI-hotspots, for unsolicited Bluetooth proximity marketing, and for modeling vehicular and pedestrian flows from BT traces.

Oulu3Dlive - 3D virtual model of downtown Oulu

Oulu3Dlive

Oulu3Dlive is a 3D virtual model of downtown Oulu implemented atop the realXtend open source platform for the 3D Internet. The current version of the model covers 9 blocks. The model is currently being expanded and will include at least 11 blocks by summer 2013.

You are welcome to try out the model at http://world.oulu3dlive.net. To use the model you have to first download and install the Tundra viewer from the opening view.

Sensors

Traffic loop sensors: the City of Oulu provides us with the data collected by induction loop sensors at 123 traffic light intersections. Depending on the size of the intersection and the total number of lanes, each intersection can have up to 32 individual loop detectors, with each lane in each direction typically having two or more loop detectors. In this configuration, the sensors can identify static traffic waiting at traffic lights, and therefore can prioritize traffic based on volume. Due to technical restrictions, we are only able to obtain aggregated data of vehicle detection events over certain time periods, spanning between 2-15 minutes depending on the intersection. A data point contains a unique ID assigned to the particular induction loop, two timestamps (start, end), and the number of vehicles detected between the two particular timestamps.

Weather stations: Weather Underground provides real time weather data from five stations in Oulu.

  • Telco-grade SMSC/MMSC for sending SMS/MMS messages to mobile devices;
