The 3rd International UBI Summer School 2012 will be held in Oulu, Finland, on May 28 - June 2, 2012. The summer school provides young researchers with an opportunity to gain hands on experience and insight on selected topics on the multidisciplinary fields of ubiquitous computing and urban informatics under the tutelage of distinguished experts. The summer school is targeted primarily to doctoral students, but M.Sc. students and postdocs are also welcome to attend.
Workshops
The 2012 UBI Summer School comprises of four parallel workshops:
- A: Information Visualisation for UbiComp Data

by Dr. Keith Cheverst, Lancaster University, UK - C: Civic Technology: Mobility, Democracy and Civic Engagement

by Dr. Alejandro (Alex) Jaimes, Yahoo! Research
Student enrollment
Up to 16 students are enrolled to each workshop in two phases:
- Phase #1: Open international call with application deadline on Feb 29, 2012. Applicants will be notified by Mar 12, 2012. Accepted students have to confirm their enrollment via registration by Mar 30, 2012, including the payment of the registration fee.
- Phase #2: Any seats potentially remaining after phase #1 will be handed out on first come, first served basis using the applications received after Feb 29, 2012. Accepted students have to confirm their enrollment via registration, including the payment of the registration fee.
Prospective students should note the following guidelines:
- A student must submit the online application form to be considered for enrollment.
- A student is enrolled to one particular workshop that she/he is expected to complete to claim the credits. The enrollment of a student to a workshop is conditional to the approval by the instructor of the workshop.
- A student may apply for more than one workshop. If the student is not enrolled to her/his first choice workshop, then she/he is considered for her/his second choice workshop, etc. A student should only apply to those workshops that she/he is really willing to attend.
- All students are responsible for their own travel arrangements and expenses. Thus, a student should make sure that she/he has necessary funds to attentraveld the summer school before applying. We provide all students with an opportunity to purchase low-cost accommodation upon registration.
Previous UBI Summer Schools
The 2012 UBI Summer School builds on the legacy of the two previous highly successful summer schools:
- 1st International UBI Summer School 2010 held in Oulu on May 31 - June 4, 2010. Six parallel workshops enrolled 72 students from 20 countries.
- 2nd International UBI Summer School 2011 held in Oulu on May 23 - 28, 2011. Three parallel workshops enrolled 36 students from 6 countries.
