UBI Challenge Aims to Generate New Ideas

The 1st International Open Ubiquitous City Challenge ("UBI Challenge" for short) challenges the global R&D community to design, implement, deploy end evaluate novel applications and services in real-world setting in the City of Oulu, Finland. The goal of the UBI Challenge is to stimulate global research collaboration on urban informatics in a very concrete manner, provide the international R&D community with an opportunity to transfer ideas from labs into real-world urban environment, make the Oulu open urban computing testbed available to the international R&D community and support developing metrics for evaluating urban computing infrastructure and applications in real-world setting.

Improvements in the touch sensitivity of the UBI indoor displays

The touch sensitivity of the UBI indoor displays has been improved during the latest maintenance operation. The use of the displays is now even easier and more pleasant.

UBI indoor displays are located in the Raksila swimming hall, sports hall Ouluhalli, City Library, information centre Oulu10, science centre Tietomaa and Cultural House Valve.

New Exhibition in Street Gallery

Petri Volanen’s exhibition ‘Paradise’ can be watched in the UBI Displays during February. The artist’s interest towards delicate photographing of nature manifests itself in the pictures of the exhibition. The main part in Volanen’s exhibition is played by the partially protected Southern Finnish marsh scenery. Volanen’s exhibition is displayed in the Street Gallery between 1st and 28th of February 2010.

Anthropology Meets Ubiquitous Technology in the UBI Program

The UBI Program, coordinated by MediaTeam Oulu research group of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering of the University of Oulu, extends into anthropology in the beginning of the year 2010. Academy of Finland has granted funding for UBI Anthropos project of the subject of Cultural Anthropology of the University of Oulu. The funding was granted for the years 2010-2012.
